There’s a lot of great GPS sports watches out there with plenty of features for sports, hiking, and various outdoor activities. So far, though, there hasn’t really been much in the way of GPS watches with specialty features for anglers. That changes now with the Coros Nomad.
Billed as “the angler’s trusted outdoor GPS watch,” the timepiece offers not one, not two, but eight separate fishing modes, each of which offers plenty of angling-related activities you just don’t find in other GPS outdoor watches. Seriously, it seems to have been built with that particular under-served crowd in mind, although it also comes with the more traditional sports and outdoor features you find all across the category.
The Coros Nomad has a round 47.8mm case, so it makes for a pretty big GPS sports watch. It has round 1.3-inch color MIP display with a 260 x 260 resolution and full touch control support. Aside from tapping and swiping, there’s also a large crown button for activating actions and a smaller button for quickly returning to the previous screen. The display sits under a hardened mineral glass, housed inside a polymer and aluminum alloy watch case. It’s got that sporty look common in the current generation of GPS watches.
What makes it stand out, of course, are the angling features. For instance, there’s a real-time weather forecast that should help you figure when fishing conditions are in your favor, as well as moon phase tracking, so you know exactly when there will be higher fish activity in the water. It provides real-time environmental data, too, so you can figure out the best times to go fishing. There are tools for logging catches so you can see patterns over time, tracking different fish species, marking exact locations where you caught a specific fish, and more.
The Coros Nomad also comes with another unique feature called “adventure journals.” This, basically, lets you drop voice notes directly from the watch anywhere you are, which will then be marked at that exact location on a map. As you can imagine, folks can find plenty of uses for this, whether it be to log trail conditions, prime fishing spots, and any other notable events that happen on the fly. It doesn’t stop at voice notes, either, as the watch can even link the exact location to any photo or video you record using your phone, which should give your journal entries even greater context. Suffice to say, this is a game-changing feature that’s probably going to be adopted by every GPS sports watch going forward.
It can, of course, do all the usual features found in other GPS ,watches. That includes navigation features with downloadable maps (landscape and top), activity tracking (with heart rate sensor, oximeter, and electrocardiogram sensor), health tracking, different sports and training modes, music playback, third party integration, and more. Other details include 5ATM of water resistance, 32GB of onboard storage (enough to store for 1200 hours of outdoor activities), an all-satellite dual-frequency GNSS chipset (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, QZSS), and a battery rated for 50 hours of operation with all GPS systems running in single frequency (34 hours in dual).
