We love the current generation of note-taking devices, especially the e-paper ones, which really make you feel like you’re jotting down notes on an old-school analog notepad. The Norway-based reMarkable arguably makes the best one of the lot with their second-generation tablet. This time, the outfit is looking to do themselves even better with the reMarkable Paper Pro.
That’s right, reMarkable has a new e-paper tablet and it’s a big evolution over its predecessor. From sleeker looks and faster hardware to an all-new color display, the outfit is taking their popular note-taking device to the next level.
The reMarkable Paper Pro has slightly bigger dimensions than its reMarkable 2 predecessor, coming in both taller and wider. As such, it’s able to accommodate a larger 11.8-inch display compared to the 10.3-inch panel on the last generation, with a 4:3 aspect ratio, 2,160 x 1,620 resolution, and an adjustable reading light, so you don’t have to turn on the lamp when you want to read in bed late at night. Instead of a grayscale E-Ink panel, though, it uses a modified version of E-Ink’s Gallery 3 tech called “Canvas Color,” which holds a series of ink particles inside each pixel, similar to printers. By mixing each ink particle on the fly, the display is able to reproduce up to 20,000 colors, a significant step up from the 4,000 or so colors we’ve seen from previous E-Ink devices.
Naturally, the screen has full touchscreen support, so you can tap and swipe at will, with full stylus support, so you can write, sketch, and doodle anything you want onscreen. It has a palm rejection feature that allows you to put your palm on the touchscreen without affecting anything, so you can press down while drawing or writing as you would on a notebook without any issues. According to the outfit, it uses a textured glass cover lens to create a paper-like feel when writing or drawing something onscreen.
The reMarkable Paper Pro uses a new active stylus for writing and doodling onscreen, so the passive stylus from the old models are not compatible with the new tablet. Latency between the stylus and the screen is also down to 12ms, which is a big improvement over the 22ms from the previous generation, so everything you write onscreen shows up near-instantly. The stylus, by the way, can snap to the side of the tablet and wireless charge itself there.
Under the housing, the whole thing is powered by a 1.8GHz quad-core Cortex-A53, along with 2GB of DDR4 RAM and 64GB of internal storage. It has built-in Wi-Fi for connectivity, wake and sleep sensors (so it automatically turns on and off), and a 5,030mAh battery. We don’t know how long the battery can last on the new color display, but we hope it’s not that much shorter than the long battery life from the grayscale models. The while thing, by the way, runs on the outfit’s own reMarkable OS, a custom Linux-based operating system designed specifically for the device.
The reMarkable Paper Pro is available now, priced starting at $579.
