DJI makes one of the most popular wireless lapel mics today with their Mic Mini series. Despite its popularity, the tiny wireless mic has always had one glaring flaw – the lack of of an internal recording option. That changes now with the DJI Mic Mini 2S.
That’s right, the newest Mic Mini gets internal recording, allowing you to record your voice directly on the mic, ensuring you have a clean feed available even when you encounter transmission issues. Even better, it offers internal recording in 32-bit float format, ensuring you can have the highest quality possible for post-production.
The DJI Mic Mini 2S retains the same compact size as previous versions of the wireless mic, so you can wear it comfortably on your clothing without stealing away viewers’ attention. Despite maintaining the small proportions, it’s now able to incorporate 14.5GB of storage, which, the outfit claims, is enough to store up to 28 hours of 24-bit audio. If you’d rather record in 32-bit float to eliminate digital clipping completely, that should go down to around 20 or so hours, which is still pretty generous. Just make sure to transfer files every now and then during extended recording sessions to free up space. The internal storage means you can also use it as a standalone voice recorder for those times you want to record a lecture or your own voice notes.
Because you can’t control ambient sound in places where you’re recording, it comes with two noise cancellation settings. The “Basic” level is designed to mute indoor sounds like fans, air-conditioning, and other typical domestic noises, while “Strong” is meant to cut through aggressive noises that are common outdoors such as car engines, masses of people, and other loud sounds. As with their previous releases, each transmitter also comes with a detachable windscreen for passive noise reduction. It also offers three tone presets. Set it to “regular” for a balanced sound, “bright” for greater clarity, and “rich” for a fuller, warmer tone. The device also offers Adaptive Gain Control, with two modes, namely Clipping Control for automatically attenuating audio in volatile environments and Loudness Balance for normalizing sound levels throughout the recording.
The DJI Mic Mini 2S supports pairing up to four transmitters, each with their own output channel, for a single receiver, so you can use just a single receiver for a four-person podcast. Even better, all Mic Mini, Mini 2, and Mini 2S components (receivers and transmitters) are compatible with each other, so you can use this with an old receiver to enjoy internal storage without having to upgrade your whole setup.
Like previous versions of the mic, it’s designed to work natively with some of DJI’s camera models, eliminating the need to use a receiver if you’re recording on an Osmo Pocket 4, Osmo 360, Osmo Nano, and Osmo Action 6. If you’re not a fan of traditional black and white housing for your transmitters, by the way, they offer eight optional magnetic front covers that you can use to match the wireless mic with your clothing. Other features include a wireless transmission distance of 400 meters, long battery life (11 hours for transmitter, 10 hours for receiver), and a charging case the can extend the battery for up to 40 hours of operation.
